Welcome Home

,
Dear Parishioners,

Last Thursday we celebrated the feast of the Ascension of Our Lord, a holy day of obligation. On this day in the Archdiocese of Hartford it was traditional to ordain our new class of priests.
It was an appropriate choice of days because the feast of Ascension commemorates the return of Jesus to his Father. His farewell address to his disciples was to promise the gift of the Holy
Spirit which we commemorate on Pentecost Sunday.  In addition he both empowered and challenged his disciples to proclaim his gospel message and to build up his church as the special vehicle to accomplish this We have received in our own baptism and confirmation
the same empowerment and the same challenge of building up the church of Jesus Christ. Especially since Vatican II the church reminds us that everyone, not just priests, have a
responsibility for proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ and to do what we can to build up the
community of believers. We need to take this responsibility seriously especially during these
times when the ministry of the church needs the rejuvenation which only we can give. Ascension Thursday reminds us of this challenge and the importance of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Dear Catechists and Parents,

Former Archbishop Henry Mansell highly recommended the GIFT Program to the pastors,

as has Msgr. Michael Motta, Pastor of St. Mary’s Church, who was Director of Religious Education for

the Archdiocese until last year. Father Barry instituted the GIFT program here at St. Patrick’s, knowing that

it would be a lot of work on his part, but a necessary step in the faith growth of the whole parish.

Our initial assessment after one-and-a-half years is that it is very popular and going well.  However,

Father Barry now wants to incorporate some traditional classes into our GIFT Program, as he did in his previous

parish.  I am following his desire to do so and would appreciate volunteer catechists to accomplish a “blended program.”

This will also answer the responses I have received from several parents who responded to my email a few days ago,

which outlined some fall planning ideas. If you can help with this effort, I would be most appreciative.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Attached is a copy of a survey I prepared for you to evaluate the GIFT program and also in planning for the fall.  Please

fill it out and offer suggestions to help in the planning for the fall.  It can be filled out electronically, mailed or dropped off at my office.

Also attached is a copy of the calendar of dates for 2015-2016.  You will notice that I have incorporated some “class meetings”

for grades 3-8 sporadically throughout the year to bring the children together to review some of the fundamentals of our faith.

These may not be necessary if we incorporate the “blended program” into the Monday nights at Irving A. Robbins.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Enjoy this beautiful day!
